Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz 2014
Mollydooker makes a consistently strong range of wines that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, red blends and a lone white from Verdelho. Mollydooker is a winery known for producing big ball-busting reds, lots of fruit and high alcohol content. The Boxer fits right in the family with big punchy fruit and 15.5 % ABV.
The Boxer Shiraz is perhaps the lightest and most accessible of Mollydooker’s reds, although by any other standards it is still a hugely full-bodied and voluptuous wine.
Made from the fruit of Mollydooker’s own vineyards, aged in a mixture of new and old American oak, this wine offers a swathe of lush berry fruit, and layer upon later of sweet spice, vanilla and polished tannins. It is seductively fragrant wine.
On the nose, an aroma of strong oak, vanilla and cinnamon. After swirling and airing it a bit in the glass, it leaves a jammy aroma. On the palate it has fine tannins and has a Grenache-like taste. Mixed with the high octane alcohol, it’s like a dangerously sweet, easy-to-drink cocktail that will have you buzzing before you know it. This is a cracking wine Australian Shiraz as it should be.
Mollydooker is a winery in McLaren Vale, 30 minutes easy drive from Adelaide. The vineyards are situated on the magical Seaview Ridge, which with its ancient soils and Mediterranean climate, is home to some of the most iconic Australian wines. Mollydooker have three separate vineyards – Long Gully Road, Coppermine Road and the Home Blocks, giving them a total of 114 acres of Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. All of their grapes are grown sustainably.
Mollydooker aim to make 80,000 dozen cases of wine each vintage. With a 1500 tonne crushing capacity, they only crush just over 1200 tonnes so that the team has plenty of time to mollycoddle the wines, and to keep the winery spick and span.
